One of the awesome benefits of stand-up paddling boarding is that there are so many fun ways to enjoy your board besides paddling around—although that’s fun, too! Surprisingly, you can enjoy quite a few activities with your SUP board, especially when you throw in the convenience and portability of a SmoothSUP inflatable stand-up paddleboard. There is nothing that can stop you from getting out and into the water!
10 Fun SUP Activities You Need to Try
1. SUP Surfing
Surfing can be a fun and exhilarating activity to do with your stand-up paddleboard. Surfing with your SUP board is similar to surfing on a traditional board in many ways. However, instead of laying on your stomach and paddling with your arms, you’re standing up and using your paddle to get out into the surf and propelling yourself forward to catch some waves. Staying upright on your board gives you a great vantage point to see the surf, and you may find it easier to catch smaller waves that a traditional surfboard can’t! A SUP board can be a great introduction to surfing.
2. SUP Yoga
Take your SUP board out on the water for a revitalizing SUP yoga session! The peaceful sights and sounds of nature will help you relax and get you into that zen-mode. An inflatable SUP board with a built-in pad is a great option to provide extra comfort while you practice your poses. And when you’re ready to cool off, simply hop in the water for a dip!
3. SUP with a Pup
Have a water-loving dog? There are many pets out there (even pet pigs!) that enjoy the water and would love to join you in your SUP adventures! It’s a great way to spend some quality time with your pet and enjoy the outdoors together. Don’t forget your doggy life-jacket!
4. SUP Party
Some paddleboards (sometimes called multi-person paddleboards) can accommodate several people! Grab your kids, friends, or a neighbor and enjoy a SUP party! Catch some waves while you’re at it, and you’ve got yourself a party wave! (Be careful to stay within the weight limit of your specific board, and don’t do anything beyond what your lowest-level paddler can handle.)
Another way to enjoy this is to go on a SUP adventure with friends, each person or couple operating their own board separately.
5. SUP Fishing
No boat? No problem! The exciting pastime of SUP fishing is becoming more popular, and some boards now even accommodate fishing gear with special equipment and attachments. SUP fishing has many advantages: you have a better field of vision of the fish swimming around you, and your paddleboard is virtually silent so that it won’t scare away the fish. Since you’re standing, you’ll also have plenty of room to cast your line out properly. Smooth SUP boards have space for extra gear as well as bungee straps to secure it. We’ve also included several built-in multi-purpose D rings for attaching seats and gear.
6. SUP Snorkeling
As mentioned, Smooth SUP boards are large enough to carry plenty of gear. So, pack your bags with snorkel gear, fins, and a Go-Pro or waterproof camera for a snorkel trip! Be on the lookout for shells, coral, and sand dollars, or enjoy viewing the marine life. You can use your board as a diving platform or even a rest stop when you need a break from swimming around. Snorkeling is a fun activity for the whole family!
7. SUP Racing
Up for a bit of racing? Grab a friend for some competitive fun! Some SUP boards are made specifically for racing; they move fast and cut through the water like butter. But unless you’re a competitive SUP racer, you really don’t need a racing board. Any SUP board will work. To make it more fun, set up buoys or other landmarks to make a fun obstacle course.
8. SUP Touring
SUP touring is an excellent activity if you feel like exploring and sightseeing. It’s a relaxing activity that you can do at your own pace and even more fun with a friend or two. If you plan on going out for an extended period of time, be sure to pack some water, snacks, and a camera to capture some pictures of your adventure!
9. SUP Camping
Make your SUP adventure last for days! Some places like rivers and canals are miles long, with camping sites along the way. Pack some camping gear and grab your SUP board and make the trek down the river for an unforgettable SUP camping adventure.
If that’s too much, simply plan a regular camping trip at a state or national park, and pack along your inflatable SUP board to cruise along a pond or lake.
10. SUP Picnic
Create a memorable date night or surprise the kids with a SUP picnic. Picnicking out on the water will be an unforgettable experience. Enjoy your meal while watching the sunset, and end your date with a cool dip in the water!
